Last year I reached out to MDT about receiving some help on a very special project that I was working on. If you have been following us for a while now, you will remember our good friend Ryker. He is blind and we needed to build a special rifle to help him learn gun safety with all of the other kids. The goal was to build a rifle that was safe, stable, and effective. We were hoping to normalize this process of teaching a blind student how to be safe around firearms. Equal opportunities for every child, it is our job as an organization to make that a reality. MDT was gracious enough to send us one of their XRS chassis designed for the CZ 457 action. What made this chassis perfect for our project was that it had an aluminum internal structure with a polymer external shell. It is fully adjustable to fit the shooter from the length of the pull to the cheek rest for comfort. It features M-lok connection points so we were able to add an ARCA rail to attach the rifle to an RRSOR tripod for stability and safety.
Once we started the build, we incorporated some other great parts from many different companies. We will do separate reviews on all of them at a later date. We added a Proof Research carbon fiber barrel to the CZ 457 action. These barrels are lightweight and very accurate, it is threaded so we can attach our HUXWRX suppressor. We then topped the action with a 20 MOA Area 419 scope base. This works in coordination with the American Rifle Company scope mounts with the bridge to securely attach the Vortex scope to the rifle. The bridge gives us the ability to mount a screen that is used to project the image of the crosshairs to the screen. This is used for safety reasons and to help Ryker’s spotter, who is his father. His dad helps ensure that the crosshairs are aligned with the target and then gives him a signal by touch to go through the firing sequence. When Ryker is given the command to FIRE, his father helps him aim for the bullseye. Once he receives the signal, he takes the rifle off of SAFE and then goes to the trigger. He then presses the trigger, the gun goes BANG! His finger then comes off of the trigger, he waits for the next command to cycle and puts the rifle back on safe. His finger remains straight and off of the trigger.
The MDT XRS chassis is a high-quality product that we use to ensure everyone’s safety on the range plus it gives Ryker the ability to learn alongside any other child. It is incredible to watch and be a part of. It takes support from great sponsors like MDT, which believes in the work that we do and provides amazing products that help us make an impact in this young man’s life. The XRS chassis is fully adjustable and well-built for many different rifles on the market. It is a drop-in upgrade that is perfect for competition shooters. Made in Idaho, it is an American- made product, with a retail price of $549.95. It’s not the cheapest on the market, but it is an upgrade that will last you a lifetime and we are thankful to have their support for this important project. It made a difference in the life of a young man. You can find out more information on their website.
