Local fire arms instructor Derek LeBlanc is the visionary and founder behind the Kids S.A.F.E. (Safe Around Firearms Education) Foundation, whose trademark motto is “ZERO firearm accidents is the only acceptable goal!" The program is designed to teach firearm safety to children ages three through the teen-age years.
As a firearms instructor educating and training the public, LeBlanc was concerned about exposing children to gun danger. In Oregon, firearm accidents are the third leading cause of death for children. In 2015 he began to look at the available safety programs for children. What he found was the National Rifle Association Eddie Eagle program. He was concerned about how an NRA program would be received by the public so he did some research and developed his own program.
In 2016 he formally founded the nonprofit Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation and now acts as board president, with three other board members, including Monroe resident Cameron Straub. Based in Eugene, Oregon, Kids S.A.F.E. teaches firearm safety all over the state and into California and Washington. To date, they have reached about 21,000 kids in the three states plus Arizona.
LeBlanc explained that “our program incorporates video games, video game violence, and anti-bullying” as well as firearm safety. Because Kids S.A.F.E. is a small organization, it is able to change how it addresses things affecting our kids a little faster. LeBlanc stated that his calling is to make sure kids are safe in our community and across the country.
Some aspects of Kids S.A.F.E. parallel the NRA class to reduce confusion with terminology. For example, if a 10-year-old came across a gun, he would be taught the same four steps: stop, don’t touch, run away, and tell a grown-up.
The youngest children participating start at ages three to four years. LeBlanc explained that the most susceptible ages for accidents with firearms is from four to eight years old. A parent or legal guardian is required to..⬇️⬇️
