The Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation

As a Kids safety organization, the Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation fills a variety of roles. Since its founding back in 2016, we have positioned ourselves as a leader nationally when it comes to the safety of children inside of their homes. We have reached over 29,000 kids in 5 states and have taught them very important life skills. It has been a mission that is critical in today’s day in age. We take an apolitical approach to gun safety and always present our important message, not in a pro-gun message, but in a pro-safety message. It is our goal to help prevent tragedies through proper education. With an estimated 450 million guns in our country, accident prevention is really important. Even if you don’t have guns inside of your home, please don’t think for a second that your children can’t be exposed somewhere. Part of what we do and is the highlight of what we do is our range program. This is where we teach young children how to shoot from a very young age. We hope that it sparks interest in the families and they continue on their journey in shooting sports.

It is quite often that families join us on the range not knowing where to start when it comes to gun safety for their children. We are thankful for the opportunity to be that trusted resource for parents. We want it to be a safe and comfortable experience for all who attend. When the families arrive we always start with a quick safety brief. We give everyone a quick review of the 4 basic safety rules, which are as follows:

  1. Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
  2. Keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. (We prefer up or down, never at someone.)
  3. Finger straight and off of the trigger until your sights are on the target.
  4. Make sure of your target, backstop, and what is beyond.

Once we all are on the same page we will assign a bench and a target, and lastly, we will check out a rifle to the child for the 2-hour class. It is here that where we teach proper gun handling and the responsibility of what we are about to do. We teach safety, discipline, and respect for firearms in a controlled environment, under the watchful eye of trained instructors. This is where the magic happens. Once the rifle is set on their bench in a safe and controlled way. We set off to teach them how to load their magazines. This is always done away from the rifles. There is never any ammo kept near the rifles, this is done for safety reasons and also teaches the kids that we never load our rifles. It is from here that we get to have fun.

After some dry fire practice with empty rifles, this helps everyone understand the process. The range is declared “Hot” and it is finally time to make some noise. With eyes and ears on, the kids remove the chamber flags on an open action and seat their magazines. The bolt is then closed, they check to ensure that their safety is on. The finger is always kept straight and off of the trigger. For many who join us, this is their first opportunity to press the trigger. It can be scary, mostly because of the fear of the unknown. Once that command to “fire” is given they send their first round down range. The nerves quickly turn into excitement. You start to see a smile from everyone there. The parents breathe a sigh of relief. What was once “I didn’t think they could” quickly turns into “I’m so glad we did!” As an organization, it is our goal to empower the next generation.

There is no limit to where a child can go once properly educated. The future of shooting sports is dependent on our children getting involved. There are a lot of social pressures currently, depending on where you live in the country that try to demonize the shooting sports. Especially for our youth. This approach is completely wrong and we will always push back on that type of narrative. It is dangerous and to be quite frank, negligent. We have to have these important conversations, parents need a choice on how they see best to educate their families. Kids and rimfire rifles are completely normal. It should be treated as such. Parents who teach their children true gun safety are more of a solution than the problem, period. I hope that my words resonate with you, the reader on how important it is to be a proud gun owner. There is strength in our numbers. Your child can get involved, they can be safe, and they can be successful in life.

As a country, we have a rich tradition of shooting and we could argue that it could be the national pastime. This will never change, or hopefully never change. This is why educating the future generation is so important. Guns are normal and we must always remember this. As leaders in this space, we have a unique job. It is our job to present the content in a way that can cross all political, socio-economic, and racial lines. The one thing that binds us all together is the 2A, regardless of how the powers that be try to keep us all separated. We must stick together. Education, gun safety in particular is a viable solution that isn’t being tried yet at scale. With over 29,000 kids reached in 5 states, we can attest to how it works. if given the opportunity. It is the experience and connections that we have made along the way that will hopefully help boost our signal. I am thankful for the chance to write this article for you. If you take anything away from this. I hope that you understand the importance of gun safety for children. How easy it is for them to learn the process if done correctly. Lastly, it is a fun way for your family to bond.

In closing, I want to thank you for reading about the work that we are currently doing to help kids get involved in the shooting sports. Once involved it will start your children on a path that will teach them important skills. It is these skills that will create memories that will truly last a lifetime. It is these memories that were given to me as a young boy from my father and I am blessed to be able to have it come full circle for me. I get to inspire others. It is the best job in the world.
